30 Years of Outerwear Craftsmanship: Inside RUDSAK

30 Years of Outerwear Craftsmanship: Inside RUDSAK

You Can’t Fake 30 Winters

You can’t fake 30 winters. Not in Montreal, where temperatures plunge to -30°C and every seam, zipper, and stitch faces a seasonal interrogation.

In 1994, Evik Asatoorian opened a small workshop in Montreal’s historic garment district. The first product: a single iconic leather jacket. Three decades later, Asatoorian remains the sole creative director, personally overseeing every collection.

In 2023, RUDSAK was named Outerwear Brand of the Year by the Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards (CAFA). Recognition like that isn’t earned through marketing. It’s earned through craft.

Born in Montreal’s Garment District — And Still There

Montreal’s garment district has long been a working laboratory for pattern makers, leather artisans, and outerwear specialists.

Every RUDSAK design originates at the Montreal head office atelier. Leather selection, pattern development, construction, and final quality control all happen under one roof.

Montreal’s winters are not just a backdrop. They are the functional force behind RUDSAK’s temperature-rated outerwear system, spanning from -5°C to -30°C.

The Construction Details That Define a RUDSAK Piece

Craftsmanship is a word that gets used loosely. Here, it means the physical decisions that separate a coat built to last from one built to sell.

Architectural quilting. Engineered to distribute insulation evenly while maintaining a clean silhouette.

Seam density and bar tacking. Reinforced stitching at every tension point for durability season after season.

Storm cuffs. Inner cuffs designed to seal warmth without adding unnecessary bulk.

Hardware and zippers. Minimal, refined, and built to age well through years of wear.

Inside the Fill: What 800+ Fill Power Means

RUDSAK uses a high-loft 90/10 blend of duck down and feather fill rated at 800+ fill power. Higher fill power delivers more warmth with less weight.

Insulation is precisely mapped across each garment, concentrating warmth where the body loses heat fastest while maintaining freedom of movement.

All down carries Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certification, and by the end of 2022, RUDSAK became fully fur-free.

Limited Runs, Unlimited Intention

RUDSAK produces only 30 to 300 pieces per design. This is not a scarcity tactic — it’s a commitment to craftsmanship.

Lower production volumes allow every piece to receive atelier-level attention without compromising construction quality.

The 30th anniversary Rocky jacket capsule reflects this philosophy: a bestseller from 1994 reimagined through contemporary materials and modern tailoring.

Sustainability Isn’t Added On — It’s Stitched In

RUDSAK’s sustainability approach is built into the design process itself.

Seventy-five percent of current collections use recycled fabrics derived from recycled plastics, while all leather trims and sleeves use recycled leather.

ECO CIRCLE™ recycled polyester and FORMO ECO™ Nylon are engineered to reduce energy consumption compared to conventional alternatives.

From RDS-certified down to Global Recycled Standard (GRS) materials, every certification reflects the same attention to detail applied throughout the collection.

Thirty Years Is the Proof

Thirty winters. One atelier. One creative director. One uninterrupted design philosophy.

What does 30 years of craftsmanship actually look like? Bar tacking at every stress point. Precision-mapped insulation. Hardware designed to last. Production runs small enough to preserve quality.
